to HOME page My collection of Zagreb Film Cel Art

In 1974, I acquired a few originals from the Zagreb Film Studio, in former Yugoslavia. NOTE: I might be interested in a swap of cel art - if you have anything redundant in your collection that might interest me, I could part with one or two of these Zagreb cels...

These 4 cels are from the film "Passenger Second Class", by Borivoj Dovnikovic.

The cels are painted rather interestingly: First, a very thin layer of colored paint, that shows the brushstrokes very clearly.

Then, a thick layer of white paint to ensure that the background won't show through. This gives a very nice flickering effect to the painted areas.

"The Guardian" by Leo Fabiani & Rudolf Borosak.

The figures are rendered on the cel in colored pencil: first, the entire figure is painted in white on the front of the cel. After this, the colors have been applied with pencils and dry brush. This gives a nice texture to the coloring.
